apostle islands.

our final big fat epic amazing adventure of our summer 2024 mostly michigan road trip was a boat tour of the apostle islands, which technically belong to wisconsin. we woke up extra early to get a spot at the front of the line, so we could have a good seat on the tour.

well. we got really good seats. for views. but it was really windy. and cold. and the water was spraying on us. so, some of our party left for the cabin below. some of us rode it out.

most of the islands were a lot of the same. our guide did a great job of telling the history and geology and maybe some lore about all of them. and the scenery was beautiful.

but we were really all just waiting to get to the outermost “devil’s” island, where the pounding waves of lake superior have worn the coastline into picturesque caves and tunnels. we cruised back and forth along this coastline, taking all the pics, imagining how cool (and treacherous) it would be to kayak out here.

the ride back was a lot of the same scenery, but we moved a little more quickly, with a bit less storytelling.

back on land, we reconnected with ike (not a fan of boating), who had scouted the little town where the harbor was. we did not buy polished rocks. but maybe some books and other souvenirs at some cute little shops. i think we went to a national park visitor center too? (apostle islands is technically an nps site). but soon we got on the road and embarked on our journey home (slowly). we stopped at a random spot in a field that derek found that is something like the geographical center of one of the four quadrants of the earth. i don’t know. then we rolled into a tiny town. found a diner. stuffed our faces. went to our hotel. and crashed.
