spiky rainbowy stars quilt. (stara).

one day, i was just minding my own business at work, when teresa (boss/owner) informed us that a new collection had arrived and we needed to cut fat quarter bundles from it. well, that new collection was glaze, by libs eliot and with each and every fat quarter i sliced and folded, my love grew and grew. when we were done, i quickly purchased one and began making future plans.

i’ve long been a fan of taralee quiltery and have had my eye on her stara pattern for awhile. it seemed like a perfect match. and now i know, without a doubt, it WAS a perfect match.

ok. so i fired this thing up in may. i’m not super great at quilts that require planning and organization. well, i am good at that. i just don’t enjoy them as much as the scrappy wing it sorts that i usually succumb to. anyways. i cut up a zillion little squares, and then laid them all out in sort of diagonal order in their little 3×3 groups. then, i started jumbling them up just a bit. enough to make it seem random but not so much that the rainbow gradient was lost. and then, one by one, i assembled each little block, so i wouldn’t mix them up.

i wasn’t sure if i was going to go with a cohesive bacground, all from one print, or scrappy low volume. hahahaha. just kidding. while i sort of did consider cohesiveness, we all know that it was never going to happen. scrappy low volume was the right choice. so i cut up a millionty more squares and get them rolling with their little spikes and such and started on the final layout.

i finished the top (and purchased the backing) moments before we departed for our whirlwind summer road trip to michigan. so it sat. and then we went to the beach. and then school started. and, well, it took a little while before i pulled this thing back out. but quilting made for a good little respite during stressful studying days, so eventually i knocked it out. i’m happy to report that i mixed things up a bit too. while it’s technically still “straight lines”, a usual go-to for me, it was diagonal lines in sort of an x shape on the quilt. or like v’s echoing out from the center to all the sides. maybe you can make it out in one of the pics.

there was really no other option for binding that a big fat stripe. and i backed it with a rainbowy starry print by tula pink.

it is for sure one of my favorites. i love everything about it and have no regrets about any of my creative decisions.

so, what i’m saying is this is not one i will be rehoming when my collection gets too big, or turning into a hoodie when i decide it’s time for an upcycling purge. 🙂
