end of fourth grade things.

as we rolled into may, the end of year school activities began to fill the calendar. it’s mayhem. especially for the crazelnut.

firstly, her class had a field trip to hanging rock. obviously i went too. 🙂 the kids went to three different stations, where rangers talked to them about the rock cycle, water cycle, and wildlife in the park. then they got to frolic around the rock garden and a waterfall, before taking a little hike to have a picnic.

the second big school event for crazelnut in may was her chorus concert. she has absolutely LOVED chorus and mr. howe does such a great job with these kids. we were way in the back, in the upper level, so the pics are super zoomed in and grainy, but you get the idea. probably need to get there sooner next time if i want floor level. (spoiler alert: we didnt).

love this pic of hazel feeling it. and of her with her buddy cole. her class had special jobs for the song about the phases of the moon. 🙂

for the last hurrah, after all the learning was done, and all that was left was end of grade testing, it was time for field day. this is a very serious event at vienna, often called the pfafftown olympics. it kicks off with the classes walking from the school out to the playground/field in a parade. parents line up and cheer and it’s a whole thing. the kids all sit with their class and watch an opening ceremony, complete with a torch.

all the kids are signed up for certain events. hazel was in a relay race and the leap frog race. there’s also an indoor portion in the gym, but i don’t have pics from that.

the exciting final (main??) event is the class tug-o-war. last year, hazel’s nerdy class got toppled. both times. very quickly. so, i was sort of expecting the same thing this year. her teacher even prepared them for this fate. (it’s mostly the same nerd kids from last year). well, the whistle blew, and those nerds dug in and won their first round.

and the second. and because there’s five classes, they ended up having to compete three times.

and wouldn’t you know it. those kids won. here’s a screenshot from the exact moment they won first place. and since it was the last event, it felt like they won field day altogether.

it was a great day. nice mild (not scorching hot) weather. happy kids. we milled around afterward and chatted a bit, before hitting up chick fil a for a post field day lunch time treat with cole’s fam.

whew. may in public school is not for the weak.
