i feel like i’ve told this tale before, but i’ll recap.
when we came off the road a few years back, derek purchased me an obscene amount of national park prints and panels. panels aren’t my favorite to sew with, but i’m making a (minimal) effort. i made this arches themed quilt for ike a year or so ago. and then immediately made an everglades quilt top for derek. but then it sat for a really long time.
well. finally. i finished her up.
part of the hold up was that i didn’t know what to back it with. but then one day i started framing some smaller panels and putting them on the wall, and derek loved it, so i basically made another quilt top to be the back.
it took me a good bit of time to work out the calculations to frame the panel. first i had to add some borders to get it to a size where the sides would be the proper proportions to add a surrounding border of flying geese. i used a bunch of outdoor and camping themed prints as well as matching-ish colors for these little triangles. and then i just opted to use up some of the badges fabric i have in excessive amounts.
for the back, i had a bit of excitement, when i realized a long hoarded fish print was a perfect color match to a great smokies panel. but i only had a fat quarter, which meant i had to piece the longer sides, and unless i wanted chopped up fish, i needed to pattern match, which i think i did to absolute perfection if i do say so myself.
i also 100% miscut a border that i chose for the capitol reef panel and didn’t more of the fabric, so instead of scrapping it and starting over, i worked in a selvage from the national parks collection, and i think it’s way cooler this way.
ok. one more pic of the front. derek loves all national parks, but when he bought these, he mentioned how many memories he had in everglades, and he, more than the rest of us, fully appreciates the biology and nerdy nature and science parts of everglades.
i have a bunch of stuff purchased to coordinate with joshua tree, which will be anna’s. and hopefully next. soon.
