a very simple last minute lego cake.

once a year, my pal kelley texts me at the last minute, asking if there’s any way i can make a cake for her tiniest offspring, davis. it’s usually prefaced with a bunch of acknowledgements that it’s asking a lot, that she knows it’s short notice, and that she fully expects there’s no way i can do it, likely because of other plans and such. this year, she texted me on a monday, for a party on friday night.

i agreed with all of the reasons why it couldn’t work. and then said, “well, what are you thinking?”
she was good with whatever i could whip up, anything homemade being better than the grocery store cake he was about to get. so, i agreed to squeeze it in. no big deal.

i made the cakes (chocolate, strawberry) the next day. and ordered some lego silicone molds on amazon. the made the frostings and fillings the day after that. i worked a few days that week, so i had high hopes to pull the whole thing together on friday morning.

there’s a chance i went a bit overboard. but, i have a reputation to uphold. and i think kelley knew this.

it’s hopefully a nod to the lego movie on the bottom tier, with a personalized lego-esque nameplate on the top. i ended up being quite rushed as the deadline approached, so it’s a little more messy and less straight than i would like. but, i think i nailed “anything is better than a grocery store cake”.

hazel helped me pour through our massive bin of minifigs to put together an assortment of lego movie guys. it was quite time consuming, since the last time the kids played with legos was years ago, and their favorite activity was taking the minifigs all the way apart. davis opted to take all of them, as any opportunistic six year old is wont to do. and he accepted a small amount of guidance about their placement.

i think he was pretty pleased with it. and i’m confident it tasted great. so, i’ll call this one a win. based on the pic kelley sent me from the party, some artistic liberties were taken with lego man placement after the cake was removed from my supervision. 🙂

anyways. that’s the tale of the lego cake that i really didn’t have enough time for. stay tuned for next years installment. (and if you’re curious, the stars aligned one other time, and i made this cake for tiny davis).
