back to school… and sports!

well well well. once again, summer vacation flew by with record speed, and suddenly it was time to head back to school. this year, i only have two kiddos in the public school system, hazel entering 6th grade (!!!) and anna beginning her sophomore year. since their start times are an hour and thirty minutes apart (7:25 for middle school and 8:55 for high school), there was no “first day of school” photoshoot with both of them. you’ll have to imagine it…

it was a nice year off from the dreaded early start and jampacked dropoff line of lewisville middle school, and i had forgotten about the gratuitous use of water as a local fire department sprays water as some sort of warm welcome attempt? ‘merica!!!

this year is quite different, with both girls involved in sports. as a former athlete, it’s sort of how i always assumed my life would be back when i first had kids, but they weren’t really interested in sports as youths, so i’m pretty psyched that we are doing it now. 🙂

hazel played rec league basketball last winter and when we learned of a shorter “august” league at the same community center, she was eager to sign up. well, little did we know, it was coed. when we rolled into the player evaluations and made this discovery, and began to realize the vast difference in size, skill, speed, and aggressiveness of 5th through 7th grade boys compared to the girls, i offered to let hazel back out. but, she’s a trooper and wanted to give it a go. i won’t lie. it was rocky for her, but she stuck it out and i think it will really help her when it’s time for winter league with just girls.

she really liked her team and coach. and probably especially liked the post game slush puppies from the gas station next door. it was hard to get good pics in that dark gym, but i really needed to post this blurry shot of her trying to block a shot. i hope she is a hardcore baller.

unlike her team from last winter that actually went 0-whatever, this team went 3-3 in the league, but then won the little four team tournament last week. two boys on her team were pretty dominating and probably quite frustrating for other teams. hazel was so stoked to win it all. 🙂

she’s hoping to try flag football at her school in the fall and is planning to try out for basketball, but plans to play winter league again either way.

now. anna.
this kid decided she was going to try out for field hockey this year. i was a little worried when she told me there were enough girls to have to have cuts, but she made it and absolutely loves it. i know nothing about the sport, but i’m learning, and i’m making new mom friends!

i’ve been to two games and they have tied 1-1 in both of them. we have to sit way up a million miles away in the football stadium stands, so it’s hard to get good pics.

in the second game, anna was instrumental in the game tying goal in the fourth quarter. or so i’m told by other moms that know more. haha. she even had an assist on the goal. very exciting.

anyways. so this is what my life will be like for the next few months if you’re wondering.
