one of my favorite co-workers at the quilt shop is cynthia. she’s a former school teacher and like a grandma to everyone she meets. when her daughter catherine reached out to ask if i would make a cake for cynthia and her husbands surprise fiftieth anniversary party, of course i said yes.
catherine gave me full creative control, which is always quite stressful. she mentioned that she was maybe thinking it would be like a wedding cake, so i used that as my jumping off point. i tried to covertly learn about cynthia’s wedding, but it was hard to get info without giving away the surprise. in the end, i opted for an all white (off-white), two tier wedding cake, covered in buttercream florals. and delicious fudgy fillings between the layers.
i made the cakes. filled them. stacked them. refrigerated them. then piped all of the flowers. and finally it was assembly time.
it ended up being one of the best cakes i have ever made. i was so so proud of it.
there were some technical difficulties keeping the whole thing a secret AND getting cynthia and ron to the location in a timely fashion, but in the end, they were pretty surprised and so happy to see all of their friends. it was adorable.
i’m glad i got to be a part of it all. and also glad that it all worked out for the cake. (it’s very stressful!!!).
