for several months (i think), my hiking pal heather has been talking about trying a trail she heard about near boone called elk knob. i’m game for almost any hike, so when she offered to pick me up and chauffeur me to the trailhead, i was glad to oblige. we were a little surprised to see how snowy it was, but it did not deter us.
it was an absolutely beautiful day. a little chilly. but the hike was a bit of a climb, so we stayed warm as we kept moving.
we obviously stopped for many a photo opp in the lovely scenery.
the frozen snowy scenery was pretty cool and required some pics.
and then heather got an action shot of me taking pics of the nature.
near the top, the trail was very snowy and icy and watery and treacherous. we predicted numerous falls, and while there were some hilarious cartoon like slips and slides, no falls actually occurred. at the overlooks, the wind was whipping and we were pretty frozen solid, so we took a few pics and then started back down.
we found a sunny spot, out of the wind, with a dry spot to sit for a minute, to enjoy our snacks. heather is a like-minded health eater, so she could appreciate my dumb boring snacks. the nice part about these cold hikes is that you can take foods that need refrigeration. 🙂 anyways. we slipped and slid back down the trail, and just before we loaded to head home, i remembered to take an obligatory feet in the snow pic.
this was a lovely day. lovely company. lovely weather. lovely views. but i definitely want to try it again in the sunshine.
